A BARREN STREET

OH GOD I CRY TO THEE FOR HELP
AND YET WITH NONE I PLEAD STILL MORE

WHENCE MAN HAST THOU,
WITH ICE AND THORNS AND THIGHS
STILL WET UPON THIS SAND
CRIED OUT FOR MORE.

AND SO TOO SUN, WITH BLESSINGS SWEET,
WITH BURNING CRAVE FOR LESS.
OH MAN WHERE DUST THOU GO,
HOW LONG CAN THOU ENDURE,
AND THEN WITH ALL THAT IS NOT HERE
WE BLEAT AMONGST THE WOLVES.
TAKE DOWN WHAT GOOD THOU HAILS
AND LOVE FOR THEM AS NOT WILL KNOW.
INSIDE THERE WAS,
AND YET WITH ORANGE BRIGHT,
YOU KNOW NOT WHAT.

TAKE YOUR TRUST AWAY AS BITTER NOW IT WAS.
THEN WHENCE YOUR YOUNG HEART CRIES ALOUD
NOT THEN NOR NOW AND IN IT THOU DOST FEEL,
TAKE LOVE NOT TALENT WHENCE YOU GO.

ANON BRIGHT LOVE, ANON.

A POET ONCE DID WANDER WHENCE HE SPOKE.
TODAY THOU DUST.

YOUR BURNING HAND WILL LOVE WHAT SHAKES YOU NOT,
FOR PEACE IS NOT THE THRONG THAT PLACES MEN,
UNTO THE WORLD THIS PUZZLE NOW WE TAKE
AND DUST IT ROUND OUR MINDS.

OH GOD I PLEAD TO THEE FOR HELP
AND NOW WITH NONE I CRY STILL MORE.
OH MAN WHO MEASURES THINGS FOR MEASURE'S SAKE,
UNTIL YOU DIE NOT ONE SHALL BE REVEALED.
TAKE DOWN YOUR SHINING PRIDE YOUR LAMPS OF LIFE
AND REST SECURE UPON YOUR CERTAIN GRAVE.
